The Basics of A Residential Roof

A residential roof, aside from protecting the contents of the house against the effects of the elements (extreme temperatures, aridity, and moisture), also contributes to the overall aesthetic design of a home. Thus, there are numerous types of materials and roofing systems used to build or refurbish a residential roof. Some of these materials may be relatively traditional, such as clay tiles, shingles, ceramic tiles, and steel roofing; while some are comparatively sophisticated. These more sophisticated roofing materials include aluminum sheeting, precast concrete, laminated glass, fiberglass, electroplated iron, and advanced thermoplastics. Many of these newer materials are developed towards purposes of high degrees of temperature maintenance, aside from being lightweight (which makes them easy to transport and install).

When building or reinstalling a residential roof, the services of professionals, such as those from roofing companies, are integral to the stability and longevity of a home’s roofing system. They may work together with a house’s architect or structural engineer to build a roof from scratch, or consult with the homeowner or buyer to rebuild a decrepit or sagging roof. In spite of the developments of the times, some of the more conventional types of roofing materials are still in vogue, both for residential and commercial uses. These materials include high-end metal roofing, which has endured through the years as a material for rebuilding or building a residential roof due to its durability and old-school aesthetic. These roofs can last for upwards of half a century, and may come in sheets or tiles.
