How Long Do Asphalt Roofing Shingles Last?

The life span of asphalt roof shingles depends in large on the climate. Asphalt shingle roofing in cooler climates such as Toronto Canada tends to last longer than those in warmer climates.

Natural buildup of fungus, moss and debris from the trees can shorten the life of the roof if left unattended.

Ventilation of the attic also plays a major role in how long shingle roofs lasts. Many shingle roofers fail to properly calculate the ventilation needs of the roof. You won't notice a problem until it is too late! Bad ventilation can result:

  • Your roof shingle manufacturer warranty to be voided (shingle roof will not last for the guaranteed time if the heat builds up in the attic)
  • A build up of mold in the attic
  • Increase in home heating and cooling costs (more energy is needed to either cool or heat the house)

Proper roof ventilation allows you to enjoy your asphalt shingle roof for a long time without re roofing. Our expert roofers will check your ventilation during roof inspection and give estimates for a long lasting solution.

Asphalt roof shingles are also called: architectural shingles, dimensional shingles, three tab shingles, laminated shingles, composite shingles, organic shingles and fiberglass shingles.

Residential roof shingles are affordable, compared to other roof shingles types. They offer tested strength, and have a proven quality track record in many climates. Roof shingles are easy to get (you can buy roof shingles at special roofing stores in Toronto), and are suited for most types of residential roofs. The wide selection of colours makes them an architectural asset, as homeowners can match siding and roof shingling colours for added style. Residential roofing shingles are also warranted for anywhere from 15 and up to 50 years by the manufacturers. Roof asphalt shingles require little maintenance, and are easy to repair.

Roof Shingles Canada Composition

There are two types of asphalt roofing shingle. Organic shingles, and fiberglass shingles.

Organic Shingles

Organic shingles are made paper and saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof. The surface is covered with a layer of ceramic granules. Some shingles also contain leachable copper designed to protect against discoloration (this also helps to slow down moss growth).

Ironically organic shingles contain 40% more asphalt then fiberglass shingles, despite their "organic" name.

Organic shingles have proven their performance over many decades. They are softer and much easier to work with, then the counterpart fiberglass shingles. On the flip side, organic asphalt shingles are heavier than fiberglass shingles, adding more weight to the roof per square feet. They may require heavier reinforcement. Organic shingles take natural, weather related abuse better than the fiberglass shingles, and are better suited for cold Canadian climates. Organic architectural shingles are also more prone to the fire damage.

Warranties range from 20 to 50 years, depending on the residential asphalt roofing shingle manufacturer.

Fiberglass Shingles

Fiberglass shingles roofing material are made of glass fiber (and other chemical additives), coated with asphalt. Fiberglass shingles are highly fire resistant, holding A class fire rating. They are more resistant to curling over time, than organic shingles, which can add to their lifespan.

Installing Roof Shingles

The first step in roof shingles installation is the removal of old shingles from the roof, followed by inspection of plywood for damage. A roofing shovel is usually used for shingle removal, whereby the debris is collected in the waste container.

Second step in roof shingle installation is the addition of flashing on various roof parts, such as chimneys and vent systems. Flashings prevent water from leaking in the spots where drainage usually occurs. To stop build up of ice dams, a metal drip edge is installed along the perimeter of the roof. Flashing is also installed in the valleys (where 2 sections of roof meet), for additional protection.

Once all the flashing is installed, a layer of felt paper is added. On the edges, a special "winter" layer is laid, while the rest of the roof is covered with regular felt paper.

Asphalt roofing installation starts from the bottom of the roof upwards. The first row of shingles is added upside down, followed by a regular roofing shingles installation pattern afterwards. The joints of the shingles are installed in the staggered manner, which provides the most efficient water flow, good residential roof design, and prolongs shingle life span.

Once the top of the roof reached during shingle roofing installation, shingles from one side are nailed on the other side, and vice versa. Shingle roof installation does end here though, as the top of the roof, or "roof ridge" must be shingled as well. The method for installing asphalt roof shingles on the ridge is different. A shingle is cut into 3 pieces, and two 45 degree cuts are made on the edges of each piece (for style). Separate pieces are then nailed to the roof.

Valley and chimney require custom asphalt roof installation. Each row of shingles that meets either valley of the chimney must be cut. Roofing cement must be used instead of nails, to minimize all possibility of drainage.

If it rains while we are installing roofing shingles, we will cover it with a tart. Asphalt shingle roof installation must be performed in dry weather, with dry materials.

Testimonials

Was referred to Pro Roofing through a friend of mine who had a metal roof installed by them. Above all, the work of the company speaks for itself. The foreman is very thorough and the follow up is excellent. Before beginning the project we got other estimates, but the pricing was higher than this company. The job itself was reroofing and skylight installation, which they did on time, despite our aggressive time schedule and challenges with access to the roof. Installation was very professional, and clean up left the property in better state than it was. I highly recommend Pro Roofing, you will be well taken care of.

Pro roofing crew are very professional, clean and respectful. Communication with the Vladimir and his crew is easy and clear. If you're looking for someone who is going to pick up the phone all the time - this is your company. Very good customer service. Pricing, work and materials were exactly as specified in the estimate, no surprises. The estimate itself was very specific, but simple. The work was seamless as well. Crew arrived at 7:30 in the morning, prepared the area and started working. The garbage bin arrived several hours later and the crew started putting old shingles away. The whole roof was finished by around 5, and it took them an extra hour to clean everything up to the finish. Attention to detail was excellent. Recommend Pro Roofing to everybody!
