Modified Bitumen Roofing System

Modified bitumen roof, also known as torch on roofing or torch on roof, is an asphalt based system designed for low-slope or flat buildings.

Call 647 - 521 - 7883 or get a quote online.

Roof System Components

Torch on RoofingWhile modified bitumen serves as the final layer, there are other elements which together with MB form a roofing system.

  • Insulation
  • Base sheets / plies
  • Modified bitumen
  • Surfacing (UV protection, and weathering surface - factory or manually applied)
  • Flashings

Modified Bitumen roofs possess increased resistance to cold temperatures, great flow resistance at high temperatures and increased elasticity.

Surfacing (Design) Options

There are numerous options available for this system which include factory applied mineral surface, gravel surface and highly reflective "cool surfaces" designed to reflect sun rays. There are a variety of colours available to match shingles or other design elements.

Installation

Modified bitumen flat roofing system can be installed using hot fire torch, or a "hot-mop". Some manufacturers offer self adhering rolls.

Benefits of Modified Bitumen Roofing Systems

  • Track record of performance
  • Superior waterproofing characteristics
  • Broad range of installation methods
  • Broad range of colours
  • Competitive life cycle
  • Long term warranties are available with many manufacturers
  • Meets building codes and insurance requirements

EPDM Roofing System

EPDMThe EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) rubber roofing membrane has been an appealing and the most common choice of the low-slope commercial roofing industry, designed to be used in non-residential roof systems, it possesses excellent weathering, ozone and ultra-violet resistance characteristics

  • Proven Hail Resistance
  • High resistance to ozone, weathering and abrasion
  • Flexibility in low temperatures
  • Superior resistance to extreme heat and fire
  • Thermal shock durability
  • Ultraviolet radiation resistance
  • UV resistance and flexibility pass -60 degrees celcius
  • Wind uplift ratings including 1-60, 1-90, and 1-120.

Call 647 - 521 - 7883 or get a quote online.

Installation

EPDM membrane can be either fully adhered with bonding adhesive or loose laid and covered with ballast, offering clean installations without the need for traditional heavy roofing equipment.

With membrane sheets up to 10,000 square feet EPDM roof can be installed much faster than conventional build up or modified bitumen system.

EPDM Longevity

As with most roofs, EPDM rubber roofs have varying lifespans that depend on numerous criteria. These include environmental conditions such as the type of building, how much foot traffic the roof gets, how much water remains on the roof after a rain, and how long it take that water to evaporate. The lifespan ranges from 12 to 25 years. One of the unique attributes of EPDM is its ability to be easily repaired and restored. Even after yearsВВВВВ of in-field service and exposure to the elements, repairs or modifications involving the installation of a new roof curbВВВВВ into an aged roof can be accomplishedВВВВВ easily, with the expectation of longtermВВВВВ performance.

Roll Roofing

Roll RoofingRoll roofing is composition sheet roofing that is manufactured in rolls, and laid on a roof in overlapping strips.

Some rolled roofing materials include asphalt, asphalt saturated organic felt (which can be standard or specification felt), SBS modified, re-enforced fiber-glass, granulated roll roofing, and more. Often materials are mixed in order to enhance roll on roofing performance and durability qualities. Some of these considerations comprise flexibility, water absorption, tear resistance, adhesion, thermal stability, and slip resistance. Asphalt roll roofing is the most commonly used roll roofing material, yet is suitable to steep roofing applications. Fiberglass roll roofing is appropriate for low sloped roll roofing applications, while modified bitumen is used on almost all roofing types.

Roll roofing is the common term for asphalt saturated felt roofing.

  • Smooth Surfaced Roll Roofing. Also termed coated felt, this smooth-surfaced roofing roll is covered with ground talc or mica. It is used primarily as flashing to seal the roof at intersections and protrusions, and for providing extra deck protection at the roof's eaves and valleys.
  • Saturated Felt. This asphalt-impregnated, organic-based felt is used as an underlayment between the roof deck and the roofing material. Saturated felt is produced in a variety of weights and is also called asphalt roll roofing.
  • Specialty-Eaves Flashings. This self-adhering, polymer-modified bituminous sheet material is designed for special flashing applications along roof eaves and in other areas. It is used particularly in regions where ice dams and water backups are common.
  • Mineral-Surfaced Roll Roofing. This type of roll roofing is used alone as a primary roof covering, most frequently on small or secondary-use buildings such as supply buildings, barns, garden sheds, etc. The top surface of the roll is imbedded with mineral granules.

Roll Roofing Installation

Roll roofing should be applied over clean, dry plywood, with the sheets running parallel to the eaves. All selvage laps and end laps should be sealed with roofing cement. Roll roofing can be applied to any roof that has a slope of at least 1 in 12.

There are two methods of installing rolled roofing, namely the hot asphalt method and the cold asphalt method. Where the hot asphalt method is a bit conventional, the cold asphalt method is the really popular one. In the cold asphalt rolled roofing installation method, the spreadable adhesive is smoothed on the roof top initially and then the roll roofing is installed over it. Roll roofing can be installed using a simple adhesive and even without using any nails. Before installation, make sure that the roof top is totally clean and dried up.

Customers Love us!

On the first day the technician actually wanted me to come up on the roof with him, and take a look at it myself. The entire roofing team were very kind, detailed and helpful. The proposal was easy to read, and the crew was punctual arriving on time as agreed. Also the communication was great before and during the actual work. Getting a new roof is not a project I was looking forward to doing, but guys at Proroofing made it easy and affordable. Would use them again in a heartbeat. Also the proposal was lower - by a nice amount - then other well-known roofing company.
